Courses

The courses below are designed to give you a solid foundation on which to build and refine a self practice. This will enable you to practice safely and smoothly by yourself, whether in a group, home alone, or travelling. It also teaches you self sufficiency so that you are independently learning, constantly building on your practice with the guidance of a highly experienced teacher, with the depth of detail rarely touched on in regular classes. At the end of both courses, you will have solid foundations of a self-practice even if you already have one, it will be deeply transformational. Many people have completed Foundations 1 are drawn to continue to complete Foundations 2.

Self Practice Foundations 1

This course will give you the foundations of Ashtanga Therapy from the beginning. It will provide you with the tools for creating a balanced and therapeutic self-practice, whether you have injuries or whatever age or size you are. We will go over the fundamentals of the movements and breath as well as postures, to build a foundational sequence which you will be able to do alone or in a group once the course has finished. 

Upon completion of the course you will have learned: 

  • How to breathe in a balanced way to calm the mind and release the body

  • To support the body through practice safely with internal muscular support (Bandhas)

  • How to modify the more strenuous parts of practice to build and gain strength gradually

  • Learn a short therapeutic sequence to bring balance to the lower body, hips and lower back

  • Ashtanga sun salutations modified with yoga therapy in detail

Who can join:

  • Beginners ~ if you want to start yoga in a safe intelligent manner

  • Experienced ~ if you have done other styles of yoga but would like to develop a self practice

  • Teachers ~ if you would like further insight into how to break the practice down safely in detail

Having completed foundation 1 course, you will be able to continue building your practice to the point where you will be adding more of the Primary series sequence. The practice becomes more 'Ashtanga' based now as the 'Therapy' aspect and foundations are in place ~ progressively becoming more challenging and preparing you for a more traditional self guided practice. The course will address common pitfalls and how to avoid them and how to prepare safely for a seamless self-practice journey.

Upon completion of the course you will have learned

  • To use the foundations from the previous course to build up to practicing full Chaturanga

  • Ashtanga sun salutations ~ full and modified with yoga therapy in detail as appropriate

  • Fundamental standing postures, depending on ability. Alignment and modifications

Who can join:

  • Beginners ~ if you want to start yoga in a safe intelligent manner

  • Experienced ~ if you have done other styles of yoga but would like to develop a self practice

  • Teachers ~ if you would like further insight into how to break the practice down safely in detail

Having the fundamentals in place this course will focus on the later half of the standing sequence, as well as more challenging balancing Asanas. Mastery over the feet will have served well but we will enhance this by working further to create a solid foundation through which to tackle aspects of strength, balance and flexibility to address the half lotus bind and how to work the warrior sequence to support this as well as the seated Asanas that follow
